The Do’s and Don’ts of creating a great video

Doknow who your target market is.

Don’t make a video that is for “everyone”.

Essentially you want to create a video that showcases your product or service to potential customers (not “everyone”). To do this you must ask yourself a critical question, who would be the people buying my product or service? This group of people is your target audience, and by identifying them you give your video purpose and direction. You will know who to cast, what type of music to use and the pacing of editing through being aware of who your target audience is. Don’t know who they are? We can help you identify them and craft a video that will be effective with them. A video that speaks to a vague audience, speaks to no one. Grandparents and young children aren’t going to be interested in the same things. Trying to capture everyone is neither logical or cost effective. As mentioned before we can help you find your target market and create content that speaks exclusively to them.

Do use a trustworthy and reliable production company.

Don’t use your mum, your best friend’s cat or next door neighbours kid. It may be cheaper, or even free, but it could be damaging to your brand. Same thing goes for the D.I.Y. approach.

If you want your video to be seen on the big screen or on TV, cutting corners to save money isn’t going to work. It may lead to you encountering the problems mentioned in the previous don’ts and come at a loss to your company. As a leading film production company, we can ensure that your video will be effective both in terms of cost and outcome.

Do keep it simple.

Don’t complicate things.

Whether you want to make a music video, an ad, a piece to camera or even a presentation, simplicity is key. Your project should have a clear storyline, if it is a narrative, or you should just know what your objective is. This is where a strong planning phase in pre-production is essential. In this stage, you can figure out what you are trying to say and how you want to say it. Being disorganised when it comes to shooting isn’t something that you want. If you are finding that you are having trouble keeping the simplicity, this is where we can help. As one of the few full service production companies, CE is with you from the first day of pre-production to the last day of post.

Do know your key messages.

Don’t get lost in wanting to make content that covers and/or explains absolutely everything you do.

You want your audience to identify you as the expert in your field, if they want know more, they will come you because you are the expert.  The task with a video is to create engaging content that brings awareness to your brand. We help you identify and stick to your key messaging.

Do plan on using royalty free or production music in your ad.

Don’t plan on using music you heard on the radio or by a popular artist or plan on spending big dollars.

A lot of businesses want to use songs on the radio however, the licensing for these songs are quite deer and complicated. To navigate those waters, you definitely need a full service production company on your side. If you are wanting the latest pop music in your cinema ad or TV commercial come straight to CE. For most businesses that wouldn’t have thousands in the music budget alone, we mostly recommend royalty free or production music. We have hundreds of royalty free tracks we can access and these are no additional cost to you. Production music is the great in between avenue. Many big labels create music that sounds a popular track, but is at a much reduced rate. We can work with the record label to find the track that suits your video and your budget.

Do let us make your videos.

Don’t use clips or any other intellectual property and scripts that are not yours without permission.

Much like the copyright with music, the same applies to screen content.

Without sourcing the appropriate permissions to use certain clips, you are putting yourself at risk of fines and other legal action. If you wish to use these clips, talk a full service production company like CE in order to get the correct licenses. Better yet, let our team come with something original for you and make other businesses envious of what you’ve got going in your videos.
